Learning Outcomes You Can Expect
- In this course you’ll learn basic footwork patterns like Tatkar, Chakradar, and Tukra, mastering the rhythmic and technical aspects of Kathak. Additionally, you’ll explore the expressive language of hand movements through mudras and gestures. To ensure proper alignment and grace, we’ll guide you through fundamental postures and stances known as asanas and bhangas. Finally, you’ll be introduced to the rhythmic language of Kathak, learning basic patterns and syllables (bol) that form the foundation of Kathak music.
- You’ll begin by learning Teentaal, the most popular rhythmic cycle consisting of 16 beats. To create rhythmic patterns, you’ll use basic syllables called bols. These syllables, such as Dha, Dhin, Na, Ta, Te, Tin, Dha, Dhin, are combined in various sequences to form intricate rhythms. By mastering these elements, you’ll develop a strong sense of rhythm and lay the foundation for your Kathak journey.
- In addition to rhythm, Kathak emphasizes graceful movements and expressive storytelling. You’ll learn advanced footwork techniques such as Gat Bhav, which narrates stories through expressive footwork. Todka, characterized by short, intricate patterns, will also be explored. To enhance your performance, you’ll learn to combine footwork with facial expressions and mudras, creating a harmonious blend of movement and emotion.
- Beyond the technical aspects, Kathak emphasizes expressive dance. You’ll learn to convey emotions through facial expressions, such as joy, sorrow, anger, surprise, and fear. Additionally, you’ll explore the use of mudras, specific hand gestures that communicate meaning and emotion. By combining intricate footwork with expressive facial expressions and mudras, you’ll bring your Kathak performances to life.
- To deepen your understanding of Kathak rhythm, you’ll explore the popular Teentaalcycle. Teentaal is a rhythmic pattern consisting of 16 beats, divided into four parts called matras. You’ll learn the specific bols used in Teentaal compositions and practice creating simple choreographies based on this rhythmic cycle. This will help you apply your knowledge of rhythm and bols to practical dance movements.
